Day Seventy Nine : Why Does This Happen?

Date : Wednesday 19th March 2014

Time : 08.13

Location : Millennium Apartments, Birmingham

What is up with this ....

I'm an advocate of a coloured, patterned sock. In the past, it's been a 'pick up anything and roll with it' gameplan. That was fine when I worked in Topman (many, many years ago). Not so much now I am a budding, young professional.

So yesterday, when I went looking for a nice pair of quirky socks to rock (poet and I didn't even know it) I was stunned at my findings.

All these socks you see above are amazing. Well, that's just stating the obvious.

But ALL of them, are singles. How does this happen. I have literally no idea! My favourite socks, and I'm unable to wear ANY of them. That is some bullsh*t!!

I'd say my top three of the selection above, is probably

3 - Stripey middle one - like the colours

2 - Right hand sock - good detail which isn't well displayed in this picture!

And the moment you've been waiting for ....

1 - Blue with brown horses. OBVIOUSLY.

But on a serious note. Can someone please explain where all  my socks have gone? There's definitely a sock thief on the loose in Birmingham.

He/she MUST be stopped.

Lesson of the day - Look after my stuff!!

Day Seventy Eight : 'Mad'den

Date : Tuesday 18 th March 2014

Time : 18.16

Location : Millennium Apartments, Birmingham

What Have I Become!!!

NFL has taken up a huge following in the UK in recent years. I understand the game (to a very basic level) but am adamant to only watch one game per year. The Superbowl - even that I always fall asleep at half time!

So when brainstorming new Xbox games to buy, I stumbled across Madden 13 on the cheap, and thought I'll give it a go

I would certainly suggest a prerequisite to owning a sports game, is FULLY understanding the rules - which I don't, and actually knowing the buttons - which I don't. Oh, I also don't know the teams, the players, the positions or the plays.

I'm starting to think I've wasted my money!

BUT.

Actually, it's not so bad. The graphics are amazing, the coverage is (so I've been reliably informed) incredibly lifelike and the gameplay is good. It's a fun game, and a decent alternative to boring old Fifa and COD - which I'm also, both of which I'm USELESS at.

I suppose I'd better get more practice - not that I'd be complaining about that, of course!

Day Seventy Seven : 'Being Nice' Day

Date : Monday 18th March 2014

Time : 17.39

Location : Broad Street, Birmingham

Om nom nom nom nom

It's been absolutely ages since I've actually blogged on a day that I've been supposed to - so to speak about something that happened yesterday is nice!

Yesterday was a day filled with niceness - from my part, and from the part of complete strangers, too.

Here's the backstory. As I've mentioned many times before, my sister is getting married on Sunday, and I am very honoured to be a member of the wedding party .. Yeah Yeah, I'm an Usher (I can smell the cheese a mile off)

Late Sunday night before I drove back to Birmingham, I stopped at my mums to try my wedding suit on - all was good, it looked great, but the jacket was a touch too big. I'm going to say it was thanks to the weight I've lost this year, rather than an administrative quirk!

I therefore needed to rush to the closest Austin Reed to get fitted. Fine. Until I noticed that the store was closing at 6pm, and I finish work at 5.30pm.

I thought I'd chance my arm, and send the below Tweet, as I knew it'd be touch-and-go as to whether I'd get there on time.

I genuinely couldn't believe a) they replied, and b) the outcome.

I go back to my Topman day's, if someone would have asked me this, I'd have kindly told them to go away (in not as many words .... and not so kindly).

I also felt quite bad, because my initial Tweet seems quite rude, but negotiating my request in 140 characters proved to be a difficult task!

Knowing that Manager Mike (as I shall now refer to him as) was willing to keep the store open for me, I thought I'd nip into Tesco and reward him for his incredibly kind gesture. I should, at this point, highlight the fact that I was still rushing to get to the city centre store, I wasn't just chilling out and taking my time. Actual sweat formed on my forehead.

Annoyingly, I actually got to the store at 17.58 ... so the whole Tweeting debacle need not ever had happened.

Then an awkward thing happened. Manager Mike said that actually, he was planning on staying a little bit late anyway, so would have let me in if I'd have turned up at 5 or 10 past. But I still felt the need to hand over the chocs.

He didn't know what to say. I didn't know what to say. But it felt like the right thing to do!

Lesson learnt today - Appreciate people and little gestures really do go a long way!

Note. As someone who works in Social Media - THIS is how businesses should be - responsive, helpful and polite.

An Exciting Weekend....

Date : Friday 14th March 2014

Time : 13.32

Office Ice Cream ...

What is that burning ball of light in the sky?

It's such a rare occurrence that us Brits actually get some sun - that it needs to be celebrated in any and every way possible.

On Friday, after a serious office discussion, we decided to nip over to the newsagents to celebrate the mild heat with a cheeky office ice cream session.

On the way over, we exchanged our favourite ice creams. I was happy to teach my colleagues about the delights of the continental Maxibon - just out of this world! Solero was a bit favourite, as, of course, was the classy Magnum...

You can imagine our disappointment when an army (4 of us) turned up to see a completely empty ice cream fridge. Panic ensues.

We did locate a second freezer which had limited choice, notably

- Strawberry Cornetto
- Mint Magnum
- Chocolate Magnum
- 20p fruit lollies (the really long thin ones).

I went Strawberry Cornetto - as the best of a bad selection - and I must admit, I was slightly disgruntled. It got to the stage where the cone was no longer crispy - just quite soft and rubbery

Oh well.

Lesson's learnt today - 20p fruit lollies .... you know where you stand with them.

What a place....

As I mentioned towards the end of last week - I have spent this weekend just gone, on an all expenses paid trip to Milan, courtesy of Indesit and Arsenal. It was a fantastic weekend - so I'll share some of the highlights!

This is the Duomo di Milano - simply, Milan Cathedral. The one regret is that this picture just doesn't do it any justice whatsoever. This cathedral is insane - It only took the 600 years to build (they must have been the same builders that build Wembley Stadium ... Football joke - sorry!). It's no wonder it took so long to build though, it's made entirely of marble and comprises more that 3400 individual statues.

Inside is equally as impressive, the mammoth stained glass windows (the biggest in the world) and the perfectly patterned marble floor are a site to behold.

This is the very building where Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned King of Italy in 1805 - this fact alone got me thinking about school, and history lessons. You read and learn about a number of events in history, but it really hits you when you're there, in that very spot where something happened 209 years ago.

Excuse me whilst I remove my philosophical hat ....

Stomping on bulls nuts...

From the cathedral we made the short walk to the magnificent Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II - one of the worlds oldest shopping malls.

It's known as 'The Living Room of Milan' and has enough shopping to suffice even the greatest spendthrift.

Interestingly, no brand colours or identity is allowed above the names of each shop. It must be displayed in plain gold text on a black background.

Up to 3 years ago, McDonald's had a prime spot in The Galleria - providing a more upmarket offering, along with the traditional Big Mac and co! This McDonald's served wine, pizza and pasta - interesting.

Since, McDonald's has relocated outside the centre, with everyone's favourite devil gear, Prada, occupying not just one, but two prime spots.

Interestingly, when I went to Milan about 5 years ago, we ate in The Galleria, and also had a go on the lucky bulls balls. What?!

There is a mosaic of a bull on the floor, and - supposedly - if you spin on your heel twice, it's supposed to give you good luck. Cobblers if you ask me - we were already lucky enough to be in Milan in the first place!

On Saturday evening we did what all good Italians do.

We ate. We drank. We conquered .... (that doesn't quite work, does it...) - But we did eat and drink!! The complimentary wine was flowing a little too nicely!

Lesson of the day - appreciate culture ..... and stop being so philosophical.

The Battle of Horse and Man

At least - that's what I think this was called.

I think I forgot to mention, I was in Milan with my good friend Robert - he must have thought he'd struck the lottery when I called him about it last week!

We decided on Sunday morning to visit one of Milan's many art exhibitions. I've never really been into art that much - but it's something I'm open to viewing more of in the future.

I really enjoyed going around at my own pace, seeing what I was drawn to. That's when I found this picture. I was intrigued.

I couldn't work out the scaling - is it a tiny room, with normal sized men, but a really short (and long) horse... or is the room normal sized, the horse is still abnormally long, and the men are complete giants (chap on the right, I'm looking at you)...

The thing I really enjoyed, was being able to interpret something in a totally unique way - versus someone else, whom could have a totally different view to yours. There's no right or wrong answer, people see and believe what they want to believe.

Stadio Guiseppe Meazza

Following a morning of frolicking around art galleries - it was time to head the the San Siro for the main event.

AC Milan v Parma. I knew from my vast footballing brain (the internet) that Milan are doing badly this season - very badly indeed. It's actually a bit of a shame, because they have a good (ish) squad and a strong young manager. It was sure to be an interesting game, regardless - though, Italian football is not at all famous for it's free-flowing style. We agreed that if we saw more than 2 goals we'd be extremely satisfied.

Pre-match, we were whisked into a lounge with food and drinks (the wine was flowing again) before being shown to our seats.

The San Siro is a wonderful stadium. 80,000 passionate fans willing the Rossoneri (The Red and Blacks) on. The atmosphere on a match day is extremely intimidating - at least, that's what it was like when I was in Milan 5 years ago. Not so much yesterday.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say there was about 25-30,000 Milan fans, and no more than 300 travelling Parma fans.

I was perplexed by the apparent hatred for some chap called Balotelli - I don't know if anyone's ever heard of him?

The game itself was decent... Well, more than decent. A flavour for what was to come was dished up with the sending off of the Milan 'keeper after 5 minutes, and tucking away of the subsequent penalty by Inter Milan old boy Antonio Cassano. The Rossoneri was not best please.

1-0 became 2-0 and the game was running away from Milan, until a Balotelli penalty made the last 20 minutes interesting. And interesting it was when Rami (a centre back who had only been on the pitch about 3 minutes) popped up with the equalising header.

But Parma had too much for Milan, grabbing two goals late on - a special team goal finished with a cheeky back heel from Aumari, and a classic diving header from Biabiany with the last kick of the game ensured the points went back with Parma.

6 goals. 2 penalties. 1 red card. Not bad.

Oh. And Arsenal won too. North London supremacy is once again confirmed.

It wouldn't be a trip to Italy without a cheeky slice - so at the airport after the game it was only fair to dabble with a margarita - the biggest slice of pizza known to man, it should be pointed out.

Epic pizza slice...

This has been a cracking weekend. Great fun, great company, we met some really nice people and loved the city. I would go back in a heartbeat - massively recommend to anyone that gets the chance to go!

Lesson of the day - ENTER ALL THE COMPETITIONS!!!

More Catch Up!

OK so I'm playing catch up again! Today's post will cover Tuesday, Wednesday and today's pictures - as I know I won't be able to blog this weekend (I'll be flip-flopping in sunny Milan!) So on Monday you can look forward to a nice bumper blog again!

I'M RICH!!!

So, apparently I entered the Dutch Lottery, and won 750,000 something! All I need to do is supply all the information for someone to steal my identity!

I mean, seriously, does anyone actually fall for these scams? It seems totally legit, right?!

I Googled this scam, as I was interested, and there's actually a section on the official Red Bull website, stating that it, in no ways, has any affiliation with the Dutch Lottery.

I would actually like to know how they got my number - very dodgy!

Next I'll await my email from my Nigerian cousin asking me to transfer £1,000 into his account, where he will absolutely for sure give me the millions of pounds I'm due to inherit from the Prince of Nigeria.

What a load of cobblers .

Excuse The Battered iPod!

I like to shuffle on my way to work (music, not dancing!)! On Wednesday, my iPod threw up this beauty.

Kings of Leon were so good. Their first three albums were so raw! Pure rock 'n' roll! I loved the short, snappy explosive numbers - but the slower, more chilled songs were equally as good.

Then Sex On Fire came out - and it all went a bit mainstream. Only By The Night was a great album, and Use Somebody is a brilliant (yet overplayed) song. BUT. The 2 best songs on that album were never released, nor widely recognised. Closer (the opening track) is slow and atmospheric, whilst the drums on Be Somebody are just something else.

I saw KoL at Reading in 2009 (maybe) - and they were good. But they fell victim of the success of Sex on Fire. There were limited actual KoL fans there - just people who wanted to see Sex on Fire.

So obviously, when they played Sex on Fire, Caleb (lead singer) got all moody because it was the only song the crowd sung to .... then they stormed off and smashed up their guitars.

Bit of a shame, as one of my favourite bands at the time, but it was still good to see them live!

For the record - My Party is a great song!

FOG

Annoyingly, this picture didn't really showcase the amount of fog around Birmingham this morning!

It was a lot worse!

The weather recently has been a bit up and down! Every morning starts off really cold and horrible and REALLY foggy!

But once the sun burns through the clouds, we keep having really nice days! I'm certainly not complaining! Although what I will say, is that at the moment in Birmingham the mercury's hitting about 13/14 degrees.

Not bad .

In Milan (where I will be this weekend) its topping 22! Must remember to pack the flip flops and swimming trunks!

The Past Few Days ...

OK here we go again! I've slacked a bit lately, but I'll post Saturday, Sunday and Monday's pictures in a 3 in one blog today, then do the same tomorrow to catch up!

Where is everyone?!

OK so on Saturday I met my friend Daniel, his brother Nathan and dad, Jeremy and became a devoted QPR fan for the day (if you're not into football, the next today and tomorrow's post probably aren't for you!).

This picture was taken about 20 minutes before kick off, and as you can see, there's not very many people there!

St. Andrews is the home of Birmingham City (The Blues) - whom I have a personal hatred for. I would have liked nothing more than for QPR to absolutely destroy The Brummies (I can say that as I live here!). In the end, it finished 2-0 (to QPR) so we were all fairly satisfied.

It wasn't like going to football to watch Arsenal. It was a lot more 'chill'. Firstly, there was a 'sit where you want' policy - which I have not been familiar with - though it was VERY handy, as I was not due to sit with my friends! Also, in a Premier League game, it's almost an unwritten law for all fans of the away team to stand during the whole game. This didn't happen either. It was a very relaxing affair - apart from the lack of leg room!

I was slightly aggrieved as I drove half way to the ground (walking the full distance would have been about 2 miles) but realised I could have parked a lot closer! Never mind, a bit of exercise never hurt anyone, did it!

Protection

I trust my friend Daniel (the one from yesterday)! He is a budding young personal trainer, plying his trade in Harrow. I often speak to him about my injury concerns, and when I spoke to him on Saturday about my intentions to play football on Sunday, he advised I heavily strap my ankle - this after I sprained it a few months ago having a kick about with friends!

So this was the result. A rather dashing bright blue bandage heavily strapped around my ankle. Unfortunately, it wasn't my ankle that gave me problems - it was my stupid football boots! My feet are blistered all over the shop EVEN NOW (writing this on Wednesday).

My return to football was a comical one. The team I play for are not very good (UNDERSTATEMENT.) They lost 15-0 the week before, so I didn't hold much hope. We are bottom of the league and were playing the team at the top. Surely we were on for another destroying?

It didn't start well, I gave away a penalty after 10 minutes! Probably should have gone home then!

But, to be fair, we battled hard and only lost 4-0. I like to think it was my presence in defence that significantly reduced the number of goals conceded from the week before**

** Joking, I'm not very good at football!!

VERY LAZY MONDAY

Monday's are the worst, right?

I must admit, I was feeling REALLY lazy this last Monday, so instead of walking home from work (about 1.5 miles) I hopped into a Car2Go and drove.

Car2Go is currently only available in Birmingham and London (in the UK) - and I've got to say, it's brilliant. It's made for people just like me. City centre living, a quick and easy way to nip around town.

You get into the car with a membership card which you swipe on the small white box on the dashboard, and they key is already in the car, so away you go! It costs about 29p per minute, which I don't think is too bad, considering I only really drive it for 5 minutes at a time!

You can park them in any council owned parking spot for free, which can be a bit annoying when there is NOWHERE to park (it's happened to be before!), then you end up just driving around aimlessly, wasting money!

If you can avoid such problems, it's a great thing to be a member of!

On my drive home from work on Monday, I did encounter some traffic, which annoyed me as I was just wasting money sitting in a jam. But it still only took me about 8 minutes to drive home - so for under £2 I was happy!

It's a dangerous thing to have, but I try to keep my usage to a strict minimum - though I'd be lying if I said I've not stumbled past one on my walk home from work and jumped in!

Lesson of the day - get better at blogging (again) AND stop being lazy! Walking is good for you!!

Day Sixty Six : Good Post Day!

Date : Friday 7th March 2014

Time : 18.14

Location : Millennium Apartments, Birmingham

Good Post Day!

The postman was pretty kind to me on Friday. It's a shame the book I ordered didn't come the day before, being that Thursday was National Book Day!

I was especially excited to get my gym ball, as it means I can continue with my new and improved gym programme! My friend / trainer (friend first) drafted me up a new programme which I'm really excited to start - it's important to enjoy something, and have short term goals in mind!

My other piece of post was from the 'For Dummies' range of books - which, when you think of it, is a little bit patronising!

My problem with this book in particular - as you know, I am learning the ukulele - is that I can't read sheet music, and all the chords are written in actual music form!

I may have something else to learn before I can get cracking!

On Friday I also confirmed my Milan trip, which is FULLY on! I tried to get Chris Stark from Radio 1 to come with me, I sent him a Tweet enticing him to follow me so I could direct message him ... I was surprised when he actually did! I told him all about the trip, and he said he was busy so couldn't come! That would have been funny though!

Chris, you're still a top man! I'll send you some pictures!

Lesson of the day - FRIDAY. This month is going to FLY by!! So much to look forward to!

Note. That wasn't much of a lesson, more of an extended note!
